Mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) appeared in Europe during the Riss-Würm inter-glacial period c. 110,000 BC. Mammoths were about the size of today's elephants, with small ears. They used their tusks to clear away snow. Mammoth bones have been found around Lake Leman, on the Swiss Plateau, and in the Jura mountains.
